I look up from my cereal to see it staring blankly back at me. It which stole the life of my lover, the life of its mother, in trade for its own. It which I called “daughter” by definition but felt not an ounce of familial connection to.

“Angela,” it is called, because it possesses the body of a human and humans ought to have names. But Angela isn’t human, not truthfully—it was born without a soul. Her mother passed away too early in her pregnancy to give birth, too soon for Angela’s embryo to capture a wandering soul. Machines kept her alive for the remainder of her second and third trimesters. It barely cried during infancy, only in times of dire physical hunger, need, or pain.

Fear was unknown and unexpressed. As was happiness, curiosity, love… Its eyes are an icy grey, a spitting image of its mother’s, but they lack the warmth, the spark, the soul. It functions like a robot: if basic needs are met, it will not demand for anything more. I’ve given up on reviving any sympathy that might have been trapped or lost inside her oddly developed body, yet in turn I feel myself becoming more and more like it.

I fear the day I will wake up and, like Angela, be an empty shell of a human soul.

It’s a rare mental condition—usually inherited/genetic, and it’s a prion disease of the brain. Simply put, the part of the brain that lends the ability to sleep is eaten away slowly. Over time the victim progresses through different phases of the disease, including dementia (even though they’re well aware of what’s occurring) until the final one that gives way to death: a coma. At this point in medicine there remains the discovery of a cure.

No mental condition has honestly scared me as much as FFI, and yet I’m fascinated by it.
